ABOUT EAST COAST ASSISTANCE DOGS

ECAD is one of the first organizations we came in contact with when we began our company years ago. Although we have known Lu for many years, it was 2012 that really saw this relationship flourish. Petjoy is proud to partner with ECAD for the 2013 Westminster Dog Show and to be the exclusive provider of custom service dog vests to ECAD for all of 2013 and beyond. Here is the great story of what ECAD is all about:

East Coast Assistance Dogs was founded by Lu and Dale Picard. Prior to founding ECAD, Lu helped several business organizations in their startup efforts and gained experience in business and administration. When her father suffered a stroke, she saw how much he hated being dependent on her. She taught their family pet to help him rise from a chair and retrieve some items, and noticed that her dad actually became more active and less depressed than when all his help came from a human. Lu saw first hand how Service Dogs could change people's lives, and in 1995 quit her full-time job to start ECAD. One year later, her husband Dale also gave up his own business to work full time for ECAD. Dale was self-employed for many years and developed skills and talents that he put to good use in helping Lu establish ECAD. He purchased land in Connecticut, constructed kennels and offices, and redesigned the house in which Lu, Dale, and their two daughters lived.

Since then ECAD has received a nonprofit status and has grown to have training facilities in Connecticut and New York, and have placed Assistance Dogs in over a dozen states.

ABOUT POWER PAWS ASSISTANCE DOGS

Power Paws has a special place in the hearts of all of us at Petjoy. The wonderful relationship we have with Robyn and Meg dates back to the beginning. We have known Robyn and Meg since our company began and their organization has become a wonderful friend of Petjoy. We had the opportunity to meet these folks in person during an event in 2008 in Tempe, Arizona. The quality of volunteers speaks volumes to the integrity of their non-profit.

Power Paws specializes in the training of Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers in 90 commands to assist adults and children with disabilities. Their primary focus is on mobility impairments, such as paraplegics and quadriplegics, but they also provide dogs to the hearing impaired and psycho/social disabilities, such as fears, phobias and Post Traumatic Distress Disorder. Among the commands their service dogs learn are: to open and close doors and drawers, turn lights on and off, push elevator buttons and retrieve dropped items.  They are also now training Diabetic Alert Dogs.
