When it comes to housebreaking your new puupy, the reason a crate or kennel is so essential lies in the history of wild dogs and in their instinct. A dog, by nature, desires a clean "den" (in this case the crate) and will exhibit a lot of will-power to keep that den clean. When crate training your dog (a properly sized crate is a must!) you will notice that they will "hold it" better when they are in their dog crate then when roaming freely. By letting your puupy or dog out of the crate and taking him/her to the proper spot for elimination, your dog will build an association with "going potty" and going outside.
Crates are also a fantastic way to help your dog destress. While a crate should not be used so much that your dog becomes anti-social, it is important for your dog to have this place to unwind in the event that your dog feels like things are just a bit to crazy.
